The weather is warming up, you’ve put away your sweaters and pulled out your shorts — and it’s time to pay some serious attention to your skin. Even if you don’t plan to march around in a bikini, you still want your arms, shoulders, back, and legs to look soft and sun-kissed. Luckily, it only takes a little extra care to get your skin into shape.
If you neglected to moisturize and exfoliate regularly over the course of the cold, dry winter, you may find yourself with parched, lackluster skin in spring. Two or three times a week, use a sugar scrub to gently exfoliate. Lightly towel dry and then apply a moisturizing lotion or cream, which will penetrate your skin better after you’ve smoothened off that flaky, dead layer.
Because the skin on your legs doesn’t produce much oil, adding moisture is key to avoid irritation. For shaving, let the hair soften in a steamy shower for at least three minutes. Then use a hydrating shave cream or gel — not soap, which dries out your skin. Always moisturize your legs afterward.
Swap Out Your Skincare
Adjust your regimen to suit the ever rising temps and humidity. Just like your outfits get skimpier and fabrics more breathable, same goes for your skin. If you use a creamy cleanser, lighten up with a foaming face wash or even a glycolic gel. Same goes for moisturizer. Switch from cream to a lighter lotion and, if your skin tends to be on the oilier side, a moisture-binding serum might just be all your complexion needs to stay hydrated in the summer.
Know More About Your Sunscreen
Starting this year, the FDA redefines “sunblock” as we know it. The term block will no longer be used because there’s no scientific evidence that any sunscreen blocks literally 100 percent of UVA and UVB rays. New sunscreen labels can only state “broad spectrum” (which is recommended by the American Academy of Dermatology) if the product filters out UVA and UVB radiation. The buzzwords waterproof and sweat-proof will also be a thing of the past since all sunscreens eventually wear or rinse off. And forget those soaring digits: You’ll see SPF 50, max. That’s because an SPF 15 blocks about 93 to 95 percent of UVB rays, while an SPF 30 filters about 97 percent. Bumping your SPF above 50 doesn’t make it that much more protective.
